Phi's Phavorite Philanthropies Part Two

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation was founded in 1989 after Elizabeth Glaser, who was living with AIDS, lost her younger daughter to the awful disease. She made it her life's mission to bring awareness to children living with the virus. AEPhi adopted this organization as one of its philanthropies because Glaser was a sister in AEPhi.

The sorority's first annual 'PHIne Affair' was held in March of last year and was a huge success. Over $1500 was raised to donate to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. For just $10, our guests were able to enjoy food, entertainment, and the chance to win raffle baskets. We auctioned off raffle baskets with HBO DVDs, gift cards, and other fun prizes. Greeks and non-Greeks came to dance the night away to various student DJs. The theme was red and black (red for AIDS awareness) and every guest was encouraged to wear those colors.

It's not easy to plan one of these events, as Chelsea Gosnell, current Philanthropy Chair of AEPhi knows. She was the mastermind behind the entire operation. She got the vendors, made sure there was food, lugged all of the DJ equipment to the hotel where it was held, and was in charge of setting everything up. There was even a special PHIne Affair cake that one of our very own sisters created!

We hope that next year's will be even bigger and better! Don't miss out!

Phi's Phavorite Philanthropies

Sharsheret is an organization that was founded in 2001 and has since grown to reach people nationwide. It is dedicated to helping young Jewish women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, as well counseling their family members.

The organization has recently been adopted by AEPhi as the sorority's national philanthropy. In that short time, AEPhi has already raised thousands of dollars for the cause. As women, breast cancer is a threatening possibility, so the sisters of AEPhi are dedicated and committed to helping in every aspect possible.

Besides PhiStock, the sisters of try to stay involved in other ways. Recently, the chapter participated in the American Cancer Society's Breast Cancer Walk. On a chilly Sunday morning in October, the sisters, along with other local chapters of AEPhi, gathered in downtown Boston to support women who have been diagnosed with the disease.

As mentioned in the previous blog post, the girls put on fashion show that raised money for Sharsheret and before their formal, they will host a manicuring event, whose proceeds will also go to the organization. Clearly, these girls are dedicated to their philanthropy and believe in its cause.

Bummed you missed Woodstock?

Don't worry, us too. But now's your chance to live it. (Well, sort of.)

So girls, put on your oversized gauze, flower-printed tops with your Minnetonka fringe boots (you know which ones I'm talking about). Oh and don't forget to put those little braids in your hair and wear peace sign rings and tons of turquoise. And guys, just put on a nice pair of shades. Then walk down to the COM lawn and be a part of one of the most exciting events of the year: PhiStock.

AEPhi will host its second annual PhiStock on September 25th from 2-6 PM on the COM lawn. If you buy your bracelet in advance, it's $10, but if you wait until the day of, it's $15.

You're probably thinking to yourself, "This looks lame, and they couldn't even come up with their own design for the poster." Well my friend, we chose that poster design because we KNEW you would recognize it as the original Woodstock poster from back in the day. In AEPhi, sometimes we forget that we're not flower children of the 60s, which is probably why we have so many hippie-esque events and themes. Lucky for us, hippie is really in right now.

Alright, let's get down to business. What are you going to do for 4 hours?

Tables will be transformed into "booths," and each one will feature a different arts and crafts activity. These include:

    • Tie-dye
    • Face paint
    • Henna
    • Friendship bracelets (except way cooler than the ones you made at summer camp when you were 12)
    • Even 2 hookah pipes (for those of you who don't really consider yourself the "arts and crafts" type)
Also, since AEPhi is such good friends with LF, representatives from the Boston store will be coming for the day to showcase some of their fall fashion line. We know all you girls love to shop at LF, so bring your friends and come check it out for yourself!

Now, what's Woodstock without music? You definitely do not have to worry about tie-dying your t-shirt in silence. Various student bands will be performing throughout the day, including:
    • Blue Mountain Bust Down
    • Hypernova
    • BU's very own Mike Irish
Each and every sister worked so unbelievably hard to make this an exciting event for all who attend. We promise you will be missing out if you don't come by and see for yourself.

Peace. Love. AEPhi.

Phi Phacts

Everything you ever needed and wanted (or didn't want) to know about AEPhi.

Our open motto (which can be seen at the very top of the page): "Multa Corda, Una Causa," or "Many hearts, one purpose."

Our tag line: Above all else.

Our mascot: Giraffe...why? It has the biggest heart and stands above the rest (corny, but it works for us!)

Our Gem: Pearl...why? It starts out as a grain of sand, and turns into something beautiful.

Our Flower: Lily of the Valley

Our crest and logo: The three columns stand for faculty approval, student esteem, and sorority fidelity.
Our two philanthropies are Sharsheret and Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Each year, the sisters of AEPhi work long and hard to put on two different philanthropy events. One is in the fall, PhiStock, and one is in the spring, A PHIne Affair. All of the events' proceeds go to these two philanthropies. Last year, AEPhi at BU raised over $3000 total to donate. In addition to the two main events, the sisters also host other, smaller ones. This past October, AEPhi teamed up with LF for an event. "Fight With Fashion" was a benefit trunk show and a portion of its proceeds went to Sharsheret. In a few days, AEPhi will be hosting "Manicure for Sharsheret," where professional manicurists will come to the George Sherman Union and give $10 manicures (cheap!!). Of course, these proceeds will also go to Sharsheret.

Along with their own philanthropy events, the sisters of AEPhi are encouraged to attend other Greek events and try to support their fellow sororities and fraternities by attending as many as they can. But what if you're not Greek and you're putting on an event? AEPhi obviously doesn't care about you, right? Wrong! The sisters are extremely active in non-Greek aspects of BU. We have girls that a part of singing groups, student government, business fraternities, sports, and extra-curricular clubs. Many girls also have jobs and internships. The sisters of AEPhi are as passionate about their sorority as they are about their school work. The minimum GPA is a 2.7. If a girl is struggling in a class, she knows she can look to 119 friends that are ready and willing to help.

Peace. Love. AEPhi.

Just A Brief Introduction...

In October 1909, seven women crammed into a tiny dorm room for the first meeting of what would become Alpha Epsilon Phi.

If you're involved in Greek life, you're used to being bombarded with information about this event or that philanthropy, or you're busy promoting your own. If you're not involved in Greek life, you probably don't care either way. The fact is, regardless of what you've heard, or what other people tell you, not everyone who's in a sorority or a fraternity is a bad person who only cares about you if you wear the same letters as they do (or any letters at all). Sure, there is a bond that to outsiders could seem strange, but they do care about more than just themselves or the date of the next mixer.

Alpha Epsilon Phi (AEPhi) at BU is made up of a group of girls that is hard to identify using just a couple of adjectives. When someone asks about it, it's impossible to pinpoint the girls as all blonde, all brunette, all rich, or all skinny. AEPhi at BU prides itself on not trying to fill a specific "mold" of a girl when it's time to add new sisters to the chapter. Yet as different as every single girl is, they all know each other by name. Every girl can say at least one thing about another girl, even if they aren't best friends. When you're in a school of over 30,000 students, it's nice to know someone will be smiling at you when you walk down Comm Ave.
When you're a member of AEPhi, you are truly part of a family--a family that accepts you, no matter what.
